With the first round complete at the Lakeside Country Club, Frimley Green, all eyes turn towards the second round and the potential candidates the lift the title. Three time champion, Martin Adams, overcame a tough opponent in Jan Dekker in the first round but it was Tony O’Shea who became the big casualty. O’Shea’s match with Scott Mitchell went to a nervy, sudden death leg but despite having the darts, Mitchell was the player who took the leg and progressed to the second round.

Scott Waites Vs Ross Montgomery

Scott Waites, the number 6 seed for the tournament, came through a difficult match in the first round. Young qualifier, Sam Hewson, caused Waites plenty of problems and took the first set before taking the match to a final set decider. However, Waites showed his class and experience by taking out 13 and 15 dart legs to win the final set and move in to the second round.

Ross Montgomery also came through a tough first round match, against Pip Blackwell. Despite winning the match 3-1, Montgomery was forced to go to a deciding leg in every set and showed some excellent finishing to take out 121 and 125, which pushed the Scot in to the second round.

Waites form has been up and down during 2014, this was evident during the Autumn when Waites won the Romanian Open to then go out in the last 32 of both the World Masters and the Grand Slam of Darts. Montgomery will be looking back to the Dutch Open, where the Scot defeated Waites in the final 3-2 and lifted the title and also reached the quarter-final of the Jersey Classic in November.

The real value here has to be Montgomery, who has successfully reached the quarter-finals of the BDO World Darts Championship many times before. Waites inconsistent form and the fact Montgomery defeated the Englishman in the Dutch Open final, only highlights further that Montgomery has a great chance in this match.

Ross Montgomery is 2/1 with Bet365 to defeat Waites and 6/5 with SkyBet to make the biggest checkout, which he has shown to be capable of in the first round.

Jamie Hughes Vs Glen Durrant

Both Jamie Hughes and Glen Durrant came through their first round matches with a 3-1 winning scoreline. However, Durrant had to come back from losing the first set to Czech qualifier Karel Sedlacek, who was putting up a stronger fight than many predicted. The Englishman came through the test, winning the next 3 sets without reply and both players finished with superb first round averages, with Durrant recording 96.21, the highest of any player left in the tournament.

Jamie Hughes, the number 10 seed, was locked at one set all in his first round match against Michel van der Horst before going on to win it 3-1. Hughes registered the highest checkout of the match, 110 in the fourth set and this was enough to see off his Dutch opponent.

Hughes came in to the 2015 BDO World Darts Championship in great form, having won the Zuiderduin Masters in December. Hughes defeated Gary Robson in the final of that event 5-0 and only dropped three legs during the whole match, which shows he has what it takes to win big matches. Hughes also reached the final of the World Masters in October, an event where opponent Glen Durrant made the semi-finals. In fact, Durrant enjoyed a decent end to 2014 himself, winning and reaching the final of two events.

Hughes has beaten Durrant three times in the last 4 matches and goes in to this one as 4/5 favourite with PaddyPower. Having said that, both players are in good form and Hughes is 5/1 with BetVictor to win, what should be an exciting and close game, 4-3.
