2015 BDO World Darts Championship – The Final

January 11th, 20150 Comments »

The BDO World Darts Championship heads towards it’s conclusion, having started on the 3rd January, with some great first round matches. The standard of the event has been questioned in recent years, especially when compared directly to that of the PDC World Championship. However, there can be no one who did not enjoy the two, contrasting semi-finals, leading up to what should be a fantastic final between Martin Adams and Scott Mitchell.

Scott Mitchell

Scott Mitchell is a player who has really come in to form over the last 12 months, culminating in making it to the final of the World Championship. 2014 has seen Mitchell win numerous titles, including the British Open, Jersey Open, England Matchplay. Tops of Ghent and Romanian Classic. Mitchell also reached the quarter-finals of the Winmau World Masters, before suffering defeat at the hands of Glen Durrant.

Mitchell currently finds himself third in the BDO world rankings and has the opportunity to go even higher by winning the 2015 BDO World Darts Championship.

Mitchell gained the confidence to go and make the final following a fantastic first round win over Tony O’Shea. This match was always going to be a real test, for both players and Mitchell managed to come through by the odd set in five to make it to the second round. From there, the Englishman showed his class by conceding only four sets in his next three matches to make it through to the final. The semi-final was probably less of a test than the first round if truth be told but Mitchell still performed well by defeating Canadian Jeff Smith 6-0 and breeze in to the final.

This will be Scott Mitchell’s first BDO World Championship final and he is priced at 6/5 with Bet365 to win it.

Martin Adams

Martin Adams is a legend of BDO darts, having won the World Championship on three occasions and also the World Masters three times during his career. 2014 has been another good year for ‘Wolfie’ on the BDO tour, winning events such as the Welsh Open, BDO International Open and Hal Open. Adams also reached the final of the Antwerp Open and Pontins International.

Adams currently finds himself in fourth place on the BDO world rankings list, just behind his opponent in the final, Scott Mitchell. The Englishman has come back to form following a tough few years prior to 2014 and has enjoyed a comfortable route through the tournament, up until the semi-final stage, where he took on fellow Englishman, Glen Durrant.

Undoubtedly the match of the tournament so far, both players averaged close to 100 throughout and both players missed doubles to win it, before Adams clinched the deciding set 5-3. During the match, Adams came close to a magical nine dart finish, only to see his effort at double 12 land just inside the wire. This would have been only the second 9 dart finish at the BDO World Championship and Bet365 offer 25/1 for there to be one in the final.

This will be Martin Adams’ fifth appearance in the final and he is 8/11 with StanJames to win his fourth BDO World Championship.

The Final Word

Mitchell took on his final opponent, Martin Adams, in the semi-final of the BDO International Open in June 2014 and lost that match 2-5. However, the last time the pair met in a final was November 2013 at the Sunparks Masters, where Mitchell claimed a comfortable 3-0 victory.

There is little doubt that, with his experience, Martin Adams is the bookies favourite for the match. However, Mitchell has experience of winning tournaments In 2014 and this will stand him in great stead. Adams may feel the effects of a tense and emotionally draining semi-final and this is something Mitchell will be aiming to take advantage of, having won his own semi-final with ease.

A close match is sure to be in store but Mitchell, with his confidence and freshness could come out on top. PaddyPower offer 17/2 for Mitchell to win the match 7-5.
